History of the Flag of Kyrgyzstan
The flag of Kyrgyzstan is the flag used by the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, one of the countries of the Turkic world. The flag, which represents the independence of the country, was officially put into use in 1992. As in all other Turkic states, the flag has an important place in Kyrgyzstan. For this reason, it is protected by the constitution and has great meaning among the people. Although the flag of Kyrgyzstan is not a very old flag, it was adopted in a short time. Especially after the victory of the struggle for independence, the devotion to the flag increased. However, in September 2023, after many parliamentarians compared the rays to sunflowers, President Japarov made a statement and said, “There is a widespread opinion in our society that our flag resembles a sunflower and this is one of the reasons why the country cannot get up from its knees.” Accordingly, on December 22, 2023, President Sadyr Dzhaparov approved the draft law “On Amendments to the Law on State Symbols of the Kyrgyz Republic” prepared by Parliament Speaker Shakiyev and MP Ulan Primov. Accordingly, the wave-shaped sun rays on the flag of the country were flattened and the number of lines in the motif in the center was increased.
Kyrgyzstan Flag Meaning
Flags are indicators that have been used by people for thousands of years and carry certain meanings. Colors and symbols that are important for the nation are embroidered on the flag to create different meanings. This is also true for the flag of Kyrgyzstan. One of the most commonly used symbols of the Kyrgyz people is the sun. In fact, this is among the symbols frequently used not only by the Kyrgyz but also by the Turkic world. For this reason, the sun has also found a prominent place on the flag of Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz flag consists of a sun on a red background and a motif used on tent ceilings. The sun on the flag has 40 different rays. Each of these rays represents a Kyrgyz tribe. The presence of all of them together is expressed as a symbol of national unity. In the center of the sun, there is a motif consisting of roads coming from different areas but intersecting in the middle. This motif is also found on the top of the tents used by the Kyrgyz. The meaning is that the Kyrgyz tribes on all four sides are united in one place. This, just like the sun, points to national unity. The red color used as a background in the flag means honesty and peace.
